This is my story of joining the 2023 GMTK jam.
Traditionally, my game jam experiences have been solitary endeavors. I relished the freedom of working at my own pace, unburdened by the need for collaboration. However, this year I took a leap into uncharted territory. I decided to explore a different dynamic and enlisted the help of the GMTK team finder to assemble a team.
While I won’t delve into revealing every remarkable individual I teamed up with – for reasons that will become clear – you can spot them credited as collaborators on the game’s description page (link).
As the final results rolled in, it was evident that while we might not have clinched the top spot, we certainly left our mark. Among us, a majority were venturing into the realm of game jams for the very first time. Astonishingly, we managed to secure a spot in the top 33%. The 48-hour window demanded me to wear multiple hats – from guiding the team through GitHub collaboration, handling my segment on the programming end via Unreal Engine 4, to ensuring we uploaded everything before the looming deadline. Without a doubt, it was the most exhilarating game jam experience I’ve encountered thus far.
The aftermath was nothing short of fulfilling. The team radiated a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie. Collectively, we decided to keep the discourse alive in our shared Discord channel. Plans for future collaborations and jams are whispered among the exchanges. The chemistry we’ve discovered is something I genuinely treasure, fueling my anticipation for what lies ahead.
In a nutshell, my participation in the 2023 GMTK Jam reshaped my perspective on game development, pushing me beyond the realms of my comfort zone. The outcome was not just a game, but an adventure etched in collaborative effort and an unyielding drive to innovate. I eagerly look forward to the next chapter of this journey, as the possibility of another jam lingers on the horizon, wrapped in the promise of fresh ideas and shared aspirations.
